In 1904 the U.S. Post Office ran a mail room inside the World's Fair in St. Louis. Clerks sorted letters and parcels by hand into pigeonhole cases and canvas sacks and loaded them onto rail cars. Parcel handling stayed close to that for decades: people reading labels and tossing boxes into bins.

Conveyors and barcode scanners sped things up later. Even so, a person still had to pull each item off a pile and set it on the sorter, one at a time. That step is called induction, and many hubs still lose time there. Parcel volume keeps growing, and staffing for peak season gets harder every year.

A September 8 market report on warehouse robotics treats automation as basic fulfillment infrastructure now, and UPS expects about 68% of its U.S. volume to move through automated facilities by the end of 2026. ABB's Robotic Parcel Inductor goes after the induction step, picking boxes, bags and envelopes onto a sorter.

ABB rates it at up to 1,500 picks per hour with over 99.5% accuracy. The cell pairs a compact ABB arm with AI vision, so it can grab items it has never seen, lying in random piles, without anyone teaching it each shape. ABB says the pre-integrated module can be commissioned in about a week.

The same family includes a Robotic Fashion Inductor for clothing in polybags, which are floppy and hard for a gripper to hold. Hubs that also build pallets can add bigger ABB arms such as the IRB 460 or IRB 660 palletizers, and each cell can be simulated in RobotStudio before any hardware ships.

Next comes the trip to your door. Starship's sidewalk robots already deliver food and groceries in Finland, Estonia and on U.S. campuses. One plausible chain: an arm loads the delivery robot at a local hub, and a home robot carries the box inside. That home end is still years away.
