ABB Robots in Home Building: Framing to Microfactories

How homes went from hand framing to modular factories, how ABB IRB 6710 robots and RobotStudio build wall panels today, and where robotic housing goes next.

For most of the last century, houses went up one board at a time. Framing crews worked outdoors with hammers and tape measures, the weather set the schedule, and mistakes got fixed on site. During World War II, the U.S. government tried to speed things up with prefabricated homes set out in neat rows.

Later, modular factories moved wall building indoors. Workers nailed studs on jigs, and cranes lifted finished boxes onto trucks. Indoor work was drier and easier to plan, but people still did every step by hand, so a factory could only build as fast as its crew.

Labor is now the bottleneck. A CNBC report on September 12 cited NAHB figures: the U.S. is short about 1.2 million homes, and nearly 300,000 construction jobs were still open at the end of 2025. Two weeks earlier, Reframe Systems raised $40 million to expand its robotic home-building microfactories.

ABB robots already do some of this work. In Pacific Palisades, Cosmic Buildings runs a mobile microfactory where ABB IRB 6710 robots build wall panels on site for wildfire rebuilds. Every build is simulated first in ABB RobotStudio, and Cosmic says the setup cuts construction time by up to 70%.

In the UK, ABB's venture arm invested in AUAR, whose single-robot cells cut timber sheets and assemble them into building blocks. In March 2026, ADMARES named ABB Robotics as the robotics partner for the smart housing factory it plans to build in Australia.

Expect more of these small factories parked near building sites, with robots working straight from the digital model of each house. Humanoid builders are still a long way off. The near-term gains will come from large robot arms that cut and assemble timber the same way every time, leaving crews to do the site work and finishing.
